Fantasy Books With Political Intrigue: When a Kingdom’s Own Allies Turn Against It

Fantasy Books With Political Intrigue

King John focuses on building a new observatory, unaware that a prison door is opening beneath his city. The gatekeeper lets it happen. John does not realize that members of his army and court have already sided with Alfred, the Black King.

In The Golden Apple, Takezo Art and Susan Ogden Benting explore the deals that help Alfred claim the throne and the difficult decisions that come after.

A Century of Peace Left the Red Kingdom Vulnerable

Michael and Jennifer brought peace in Michael the Brave and the Silver Apple. A hundred years later, their son John leads the Red Kingdom. His observatory plans show the country is looking past war, but some soldiers who fought for peace now feel left behind.

General Morghan stands in the Hall of Memory, looking at a tapestry of Michael. He thinks about what soldiers sacrificed in the past and feels their service is now ignored. Alfred’s followers promise him a role in their new kingdom, and Morghan agrees.

A judge is frustrated by the limits of his job. A merchant prince is unhappy with trade laws that cut into his profits. Alfred’s agents approach both men with offers. These deals give Alfred a way into the court, the army, and the trade routes.

The Escape Began With Bought Loyalty

The guards watching the Black Royal Family are tempted by gold, secrets, and promises of power. One gatekeeper opens the prison. John’s defenses collapse because the person with the key has switched loyalties.

Alfred’s network goes beyond the prison. A scribe has access to central records, and an assistant works close to John’s top advisor. Their jobs let them move through government offices without raising suspicion.

While festivals go on in the capital, John looks over his plans, not knowing Alfred has escaped. When the danger finally becomes clear, many who could have warned him are already part of the plot.

The Generals Who Turned Against Their Kingdom

Alfred offers top Red Army generals roles in his new empire. Some accept, while those who refuse are killed before they can alert John. Now, soldiers follow leaders whose true loyalties are secret.

The orders still seem official. The soldiers may not notice that obeying their commanders now means betraying the kingdom they once promised to protect.

The generals who sided with Alfred come together to celebrate, expecting a reward for their help. But Alfred knows how quickly they turned on their old ruler, and he sees that their value to him will not last forever.

Later, regular soldiers fight under the Black Army’s flag. Some support Alfred’s cause, while others stay to protect their families or because they see no way out. Their armor hides who might secretly help the resistance.

What Happens When a Kingdom Falls From Within

John and Queen Camelia are forced off the throne. Alfred takes over the Red Army and changes it into the Black Army. The Yellow and Blue Kingdoms reject his rule, and the war drags on for twenty years.

In the Red Kingdom, Alfred decides what people can say about history. Speaking John’s name becomes risky. Libraries shut down. Children learn only Alfred’s version of the past. A teacher goes missing after mentioning old rulers, and a sculptor disappears after a Silver Dragon statue is destroyed.

Now, parents risk trouble by telling stories about Michael and Jennifer. Soldiers who remember the Red Army can be exposed just by showing kindness to an old friend. Loyalists must find each other without knowing who they can trust.

Michael and Jennifer Return to a Broken Kingdom

The Golden Apple Tree brings Michael and Jennifer back to a world that feels unfamiliar. At a Black Army camp, General Jan recognizes them from a portrait passed down by his great-grandparents. He has fought in Alfred’s war for years but no longer believes in it, and he knows other soldiers who feel the same.

Jan’s recognition starts a conversation, but it does not erase everyone’s doubts. Jennifer confronts General Frederic about his army’s actions. She searches for resistance fighters who have spent years in hiding and may not trust outsiders. Michael tries to unite soldiers and kingdoms that have grown suspicious of each other.

The Golden Apple and a wounded Silver Dragon both play a part in this struggle, but the people Michael and Jennifer meet must still make their own choices. The Golden Apple raises the question of how trust can return after a generation shaped by betrayal. To read the whole story, begin with Michael the Brave and the Silver Apple, then continue with The Golden Apple, the second book in The Apple Series.
